In short and practical terms from my experience:
Pre-vacuuming with a good vacuum cleaner (several times in different directions).
Pre-treat the stain : Apply mild soapy water or a special carpet stain remover to the affected area and let it soak in briefly; do not apply too wet.
Deep cleaning with a mop/spray extraction machine – many hardware stores rent these machines for a weekend. This will remove embedded dirt much more effectively than hand scrubbing alone.
Allow to dry thoroughly to prevent odors from forming.
Small, regularly used areas can be easily refreshed this way; however, extremely old or discolored areas are difficult to treat perfectly yourself.
